Maria Gaetana Agnesi (* 16. May 1718 in Milan; † 9. January 1799 in Milan) was an Italian Mathematikerin and Philanthropin.


Maria Gaetana originated from a wealthy buyer family and was the oldest ofaltogether 21 children. In particular their father promoted its mathematical gift and help her to good training. When it was 21 years old, it wished to go into the monastery. Their father was however against it and Agnesi respected this desire. One decade long dedicated itself itmathematics and the sciences and 1748 its work Instituzioni analitiche (bases of the analysis) was published.

Maria Gaetana Agnesi dedicated her book to the empress Maria Theresia and from this to the thanks plentifully with jewels was presented. Of Pope Benedikt XIV. became it 1748 the Professorinthe University of Bologna appointed. She there however never taught, although her well-known time companion, who asked Physikerin Laura Bassi, her several times for it.

When Maria Agnesi was 34 years old, their father died. From now on it gave the science up in favor of its faith and karitativen activities.It studied theology and worried about arms and patient.
