Matagalpa
Matagalpa is the capital of the Departamentos Matagalpa, with 485.500 inhabitants the second largest administrative district in Nicaragua. The Municipio Matagalpa counts about 200,000 inhabitants. On it about 120,000 in the city and about 80,000 in the surrounding countryside lives. Matagalpa lies at a value of 681 meters over the sea level.
The city lies 132 kilometers north of of Nicaragua capital Managua. The Gemeindegebiet amounts to 64,065 square kilometers and borders in the north on the Municipio of Jinotega, in the east on the Municipios del Tuma (La Dalia, San Ramón and Muy Muy), in the south on the Municipio of Esquipulas y San Dionisio and in the west on the Municipio of Sebaco. The population density is relatively high with 312 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Before the arrival of the Spaniards there were already indianische settlements in the area, of which a Matagalpa or a Pueblo Grande mentioned became. The two different were called Solingalpa and Molagüina. Municipal rights Matagalpa received to 14. Febrauar 1862.
Matagalpa makes a substantial contribution for the gross domestic product of Nicaragua. Economically Matagalpa stands after Managua on the second place. The relative wealth of the city therefore agitates that Matagalpa is the center of the cultivation of coffee in Nicaragua. From this source a large part of the incomes originates. Besides beans, corn and vegetables are cultivated. In recent time increased also flowers for the export are bred.
Since 1987 a partnership between cities with Wuppertal exists.
