Medan

Medan is the capital of the Indonesian province Sumatra Utara (north sumatra). The city is, with something over three million inhabitants, the third biggest city of Indonesia. In the Metropolregion Medan with the adjacent sea port Belawan live altogether over six million humans.

Nur eine Autostunde von der Stadt entfernt befindet sich das „Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center“ in Bohorok, am Rand des Gunung-Leuser-Nationalparks.

Geschichte

Die Stadt Medan wurde am 1. Juli 1590 gegründet. Medan war seit dem 16. Jahrhundert bis zur holländischen Kolonialzeit Zentrum des Sultanates Medan.
