Melon one calls occurring plants with large, juice-rich fruits in the Tropics. They belong to the family of the cure until plants, however contrary to other representatives of this family than fruit are used. The name originates from the Greek one and means “large apple”. It is differentiated mainly between sugar melons and Wassermelonen. The term honey melon is used frequently as synonym for sugar melon, describes however strictly speaking the sugar melon subspecies (Cucumis melo ssp. melo var. inodorus).

Melons are regarded in the Botanik not as group of relationship, the sugar melons (Cucumis melo) are more closely related to the cucumbers than with the Wassermelonen (Citrullus lanatus).
