</div> The Netherlands (Netherlands Nederland) are part of the kingdom of the Netherlands in Western Europe. They are one of the most closely settled states of the world. A quarter of the country lies approximately below the sea level and is protected with approximately 3,000 km dykes.
In the German and English linguistic area as also in the Netherlands themselvesin place of the official and correct designation the Netherlands colloquially frequently the name Holland for the entire national territory is used.
