Nome is a city in the US Federal State Alaska. It has approx. 3,800 inhabitants (conditions: 2004) on a surface of 55,9 km ². The city lies with the geographical coordinates
coordinates: 64,51° N, 165,42° W 64,51° N, 165,42° W.
The region of Nome was used of the Inuit for many centuries as hunt reasons, it however never gave a firm settlement. 1889 found Sweden Jafet Lindberg, Eric Lindblöm and John Brynteson gold in the proximity of the today's Nome. Thus fast a firm settlement was created, which had already 1899 10,000 inhabitants.
Large fires in the years 1905 and 1934 and enormous storms 1900, 1913, 1945 and 1974 destroyed the gold grave architecture of the city, from which today nothing more is received.
Nome is the destination for the Iditarod, the longest and hardest carriage dog running of the world. Start is in each case at the 1. Saturday in March in Anchorage. The first bottom plates reach that 1500 km removed a goal after 9 days. Running reminds of the dramatic transport from serum to the fight of a Diphtherieepidemie, which had broken 1925 off in the city.
