Pauly Wissowa

Pauly Wissowa (shortened P. - W.), also Pauly Wissowa Kroll or usually simply only RH are the common abbreviations for Paulys Realencyclopädie of the classischen antiquity science, an extensive and comprehensive encyclopedia to the antique one.

August Friedrich Pauly justified 1837 the material Encyclopädie of the classischen Alterthumswissenschaft in alphabetical order (6 volumes in 7 volumes, until 1852). In addition persons are in this encyclopedia different than registered in the Pauly Wissowa under the name, under which them admit are. Thus one opens antique personalities, whom one does not know over the small Pauly the names. As example: Marcus Tullius Cicero stands in the small Pauly under his well-known name Cicero, in the RH under its Gentilnamen Tullius.

Differently than its predecessors the new Pauly places also the classical antique one into the center, however one extended the spectrum considerably. The roots and bases of the Greek-Roman world in the old-eastern and Egyptian cultures were now referred more in detail, like also reciprocal effects with the neighboring nations and cultures; likewise the Byzantinistik was included. Also the transformation of the old persons world in the context of late ancient times is more strongly considered, whereby the treated time to 600 was expanded beyond that and.
