Puddelverfahren
the Puddelverfahren is a procedure for the production of steel from pig irons.
The Puddelverfahren is one of the oldest procedures for steel production. It was developed 1784 by Henry Corte and attained during the industrialization great importance (z. B. for steam engines).
With the Puddeln the pig iron in large pans of a Puddelofens is melted and through-agitated then with long bars (puddled). Thus it is exposed to oxygen-containing incineration gases again and again and “blown” thus, in order to drive the impurities out and burn carbon. The subsequent treatment of the so-called ball makes the production possible of inexpensive tonnage steel.
