With the Quattro drive the engine strength is distributed on all four wheels. Technically two principles are used:
- With the A3 and TT it acts around a clutch-steered (automatically connecting) all-wheel drive with Haldex - clutch. These vehicles become of the VOLKSWAGEN - gulf platform derived and the all-wheel drive is adapted to the engine installation (front/crosswise).
- With the remaining models with the classical AUDI installation position of the engine (front/lengthwise) it concerns a differential-steered (permanent) all-wheel drive, which justified the call of AUDI in its prototype and since longer in the central differential the check differentials of Torsen in the type A (snails, crossing planet axles) or B (helical gearing, parallel planet axles) uses.
The all-wheel drive is to improve active security, traction and the straight line discharge compared with the AUDI vehicles otherwise front-propelled. The area fitness is reduced contrary to jeeps by the normal clearance with most AUDI models. For example the AUDI Allroad quattro , an AUDI A6 with increased clearance, or the SUV Q7 forms an exception.
In the year 1986 AUDI published a publicity film, in which an AUDI 100 drives up quattro from own Kraft a snow-covered Finnish Skisprungschanze with an upward gradient of 80%. The film was distinguished with the film festivals in Cannes with the golden palm. Since a safeguard rope was to be recognized, doubts about the all wheel abilities arose. For the 25-year old anniversary of the Quattro drive in the year 2005 these advertising photographs were repeated with an AUDI A6 and successfully under observation of the media.
Meanwhile each fourth AUDI is equipped with the Quattro drive. All vehicles the sporty AUDI “S” - and “R-S” - series are in series equipped with the Quattro drive.
