R and/or. r is the 18. Letter of the latin of alphabet and in most languages Consonantally. The letter R has an average frequency of 7 per cent in German texts. It is thereby that fifth-most frequent letter in German texts.

Discussion
In German R becomes since that 17./18. Century usually as Zaepfchen r [?] (more uvularer Vibrant) expressed. The letter became original as "more rolled" tongue pointed sound [r] (more alveolarer Vibrant) spoken. In Bavaria, Austria and western German Switzerland outweigh this discussion still, as also in east and south Europe. The change of the discussion took place under the influence of the French one.

In proto semitischen alphabet the letter represented the profile of a human head. In phoenizischen alphabet the head was strongly stylized. The letter got the name Resch (head) and stood for the sound value [r].
Into that Greek alphabet became the Resch under the name Rho taken over. With the time the Rho and with the change of the writing direction changed also the letter was rounded off orientation. Sometimes the Rho was written also with a short beginning under the roundness, this modification was not taken up however to the Greek alphabet.
To the etruskische alphabet the Rho was transferred as R. Also the Etrusker wrote the letters partially, partially without beginning. When the Romans the etruskische alphabet took over, used they the version with beginning, around it of P differentiate to be able. The beginning grew with the time and up to the Roman Antique one up to Baseline the letter.
