The history of the governmental district Lueneburgdecreases/goes back up to the year 1885, when that was divided for 1866 Prussian former Kingdom of Hanover become as now Prussian province Hanover into governmental districts. Model were already in other Prussian provinces the 1815/16 established governmental districts. At that time also the governmental district developedLueneburg.
At the 1. February 1978 was increased the governmental district Lueneburg around the area of the dissolved governmental district Stade. It delivered however also areas to the governmental district Braunschweig, i.e. the district GIF horn and the city wolf castle.
The governmental districts of the countryLower Saxony existed only up to 31. December 2004. Since that 1. January 2005 all district governments, also those of the district Lueneburg, are dissolved. In Lueneburg 1 is starting from that. January 2005 the national school administrative board and police headquarters in the old district government building accommodated.
