description of mission
the Columbia mission was the 22. and last employment of the Spacelab. During the neuro lab mission one concentrated particularly on the function of the brain. In addition investigations at humans and at animals were made. On board were beside the 7 spacemen also 18 pregnant mice, 152 rats, 135 snails, 229 sword tail fish, 4 oyster fish and 1514 crickets. Most animals however were already killed and examined either in the orbit or after the landing. A large number ended also during the flight. Investigations concerned the Embryonalentwicklung, brain tissue and - activity as well as the sense of balance. In addition the oyster fish special electrodes in the interior ear had implantiert.
Also at four astronauts extensive investigations were made. Thus the sleep in all was in every detail examined its phases (brain and bodily functions). In addition the co-ordination was investigated by brain and body movements. In addition the test subjects had to catch balls and to pursue light spots with the eyes. Further tests concerned the adjustment to weightlessness, the function of the sense of balance, the use of medicines against the spaceman illness, the treatment of sleeplessness, feelings of dizziness, low blood pressure and immune weakness symptoms.
