Sarmatien
as Sarmatien or Sarmatia designated the Romans and Byzantiner particularly in late ancient times all country between the Weichsel and the Volga, which bear the name Sarmati lowlandses this very day in the science also. The area was inhabited by the sarmatischen peoples.

area
after Greek acceptance became Sarmatien since Alexander the large one by the Tanais (Don) in a European and an asiatic half divorced (see also Innereurasi border). As mountains in the European Sarmatien are called: the mountains Amadoka (hill chain of Charkow and Kiew), the Alauni mountains (between Dnjepr and Don) and that Rhipäi mountains (either the Waldaihöhen or the north Urals is meant).
Rivers in the European Sarmatien were: the Borysthenes (Dnjepr), Hypanis (nose), Tyras (Dnjestr) and Tanais (Don) with Gerrhos (Donez); northward, into that Suevi sea (Baltic Sea), flow: Vistula (Weichsel), Guttalos (Pregel), Chronos (Niemen).
With exception of the southern lines the country was rau and winter, by nature little for the agriculture, all the more however for the cattle breeding suitable. The most important cities were: Tanais (to the west of Asow), Olbia (to the Hypanismündung), Nikonton and Tyras (at the delta of the Tyras), all been because of the coast of the black sea.
The asiatic Sarmatien handed from the Kaspi sea and the Caucasus until far eastward and by numerous, only to the name after well-known people shanks was usually inhabited.

the inhabitants, Sauromaten or Sarmaten, seem already with Herodot and cover after Ptolemäos four large to people shanks:

- the Veneden (turns), more south, of the Weichsel;
- the Bastarner, between Weichsel and Karpathen, and
- the Jazygen, on the north bank of the Palus Maeotis (Asow sea), late further west.
But this organization is not ethnographisch purely geographically , since in the Ästuern ancestor of the Litauer, into which Veneden Slawen were recognized, and which are Bastarner of thrakischen origin.
Trunks of the Sarmaten are the Maioten, Alanen, Roxolanen and Jazygen.
Whether the Sarmaten with the Skythen, under whose names they become with included usually was the same trunk or another people (some scientists assume also an immigration from media), be decided with difficulty could. Anyhow they both belonged to the Iranian people family.
