Slough [slaʊ] is a city and a Unitary Authority in Berkshire in the south of England.

history
the predominant part of the city was originally part of Buckinghamshire and developed over years from the fusion of villages along the road A4 between London, Bath and Bristol. The city (as Slo) is called for the first time in the year 1196. The name is probably due to the English word for sump (slough) , possibly also to sloe (Schlehe).
The astronomer William Herschel (1738 - 1822) and its sister Caroline provided the first map of the universe with a telescope, which had built Herschel in its garden in the Windsor Road in Slough. A monument reminds today of it. William Herschel married in sp Laurence's Church in Slough, in which he is also buried.
