Support (construction unit)
a support is (usually) a vertical construction unit, which takes up and passes a resting on mainly toward its longitudinal axis.
As material all building materials are applicable , which possess a sufficient pressure strength. In the building industry are for this mainly used:
- Wood
- natural stone
- brick-work from artificial stones
- concrete
- metal - steel, aluminum (z. B. with fronts), in former times also iron and cast iron
- combinations of it like z. B. Reinforced concrete or steel group
the load-carrying capacity of a support hangs off of the firmness of the selected material, the cross-sectional dimensions and the cross-sectional shape, the length and/or. Height of the support, the conditions of support at the ends (swivelling or turningobstructed), geometrical imperfections such as z. B. Tilt, curvature or twist and the kind and the combination of the demand (EN).
Supports with larger dimensions are designated also than columns (e.g. Brückenpfeiler), likewise during execution in brick-work or natural stone. Round supports also columns are called.
Fundamental solutions of the break problem for the computation of the load-carrying capacity of a support were developed by the mathematician Leonhard Euler.
