Sulawesi
Sulawesi (in former times Celebes) is an Indonesian island and between Borneo and new Guinea with a surface of 189.216 km ². The inhabitants concentrate in the southwest around Ujung Pandang - alias Makassar - and in the north around Manado (onlyinternational airport), Gorontalo, Poso, Palu and Luwuk.
The island is strongly arranged volcanic origin and therefore and from very irregular shape; their form reminds of a Orchidee or a Krake. Of the Celebessee in the north the road of Makassar leadsin the west of Sulawesi into the Javasee. It is cut in the northern part of the equator, which means strong precipitation for the central mountain country the whole year over. The consequence is a sumptuous vegetation with close rain and low stratus forest,in trunks on the stage, isolated this very day, the stone time culture live.
The population, approximately 16 millions (Conditions 2004), is ethnographisch strongly arranged; admit are the Makassaren and Bugis of the southwest peninsula, both once feared Piraten, the Toraja in, the Minahasa found as well as central high country, their funeral customs routistic interest around Manado, which are different than otherwise in Muslim Indonesia Christians and form therefore a cultural bridge to the Philippines. Muslims place the majority, 18 with 80%% are Christians. Besides there are like everywhere in Indonesia also in Sulawesi minorities of Hindus, Buddhisten and Animisten.
Sulawesi only islamized around 1630, about at the same time came also Christian mission acres to Sulawesi.
After nearly 50jähriger construction periodnow the Trans Sulawesi Highway pulls itself nearly 2000 km of the island capital Ujung Pandang in the south after Manado by the island.

Touristisch interesting is northern the Toraja - areaof Ujung Pandang, the central high country - in particular for jungle routes -, the dipping areas with Palu, the area around the island Bunaken north of Manado, the Lembeh Street, the routistic perfectly unknown Banggai islands (immersion time Octobers until March) scarcely south of Luwukand - still - the very nature-left Togian islands, explained since October 2004 as the national park by the Minister for forestry. The park covers all islands of the Togians, both the terrestrial and the marine portion. Those became simultaneousIslands to the district Kebupaten Ampana and not longer Kebupaten Poso subordinates.
