Toledo war

the Toledo war of 1835 took place due to a controversy between that US - Federal State Ohio and the Michigan - territory around the city Toledo .

Because of inaccurate land surveyings in early 19. Century was indicated the south point of the Michigan lake as two different coordinates. During the establishment Michigan- Territory it was specified that the entire country up to the south point belonged to the Michigan territory. Michigan stated, the southern line would be the correct, while Ohio regarded the northern line as the correct border. This diversity of opinion led to a strip of disputed country, well-known as Toledo strip. Toledo was the only important city, which was in this strip.

When Michigan should receive the status of a Federal State, the border question became acute. Michigan and Ohio could not agree and Ohio governor Robert Lucas certain districts (English county), in those it appropriate authorities installed.Toledo lay in the Lucas County designated after the governor. Michigan of 23 years old territorial governor Stevens T. Mason reacted to this sovereign demand with the delegation of militias into the region. Lucas did the same.
