slat (English. also slat = border, board or slot = slot, see below) are aerodynamic flaps at the front of the bearing area of an airplane. They increase the maximum angle of incidence of a bearing area, by supplying additional current to the upper side of wing. Some Slats increases additionally the curvature of the profile, whereby a larger lift results. They belong to the lift assistance. The airplane can in such a way fly with same lift clearly more slowly, and z. B. on a shorter runway land or start. One finds frequently at airplanes with STOL - characteristics ( Short Take off and Landing) to slat for this reason.

slat are usually used in combination with the landing flaps attached at the rear edge of the wing.

One differentiates:

  • mobile slats (English: slats), which are retracted and are extended (electrically/hydraulically or automatically by the stagnation pressure).
  • firm slat (English: slots), firm column in the front edge of a bearing area, which have the same purpose, but are continuously effective and thus the maximum speed of the airplane lower.
