Vranov nad Dyjí

Vranov nad Dyjí, (German Frain) is a municipality with 888 inhabitants in Tschechien. It is appropriate for the Austrian border to the Thaya in Südmähren, 3 km north with Hardegg.

Over the Thaya is from the time of the baroque the coming lock Vranov nad Dyjí. In Vranov the Thaya is accumulated, between 1930 and 1935 the established Frainer dam (Vranovská Přehrada) seizes 133 million m ³ water and is a recreation area. Between Vranov and Podmyče (Pomitsch) are attachment plants of the Czechoslovakian barrier.

the castle Vranov to the Thaya is already mentioned in the year 1100 in the chronicle of the Cosmas of Prague. The first proof for the small market town Frain originates from the year 1323. Since that 15. Century was the castle and marks in the possession of the light citizens. Between 1790 and 1882 a factory existed for stoneware in Frain, which produced starting from 1820 table-ware in the procedure developed by Josiah Wedgwood. The Frainer Wedgwoodkeramik enjoyed a good reputation because of their artistic organization at home and abroad. In 19. Century became Frain court seat and had in the year 1890 1,023 inhabitants. To 24. May 1945 the almost exclusively German inhabitants were driven out.

Gedenkstein of the homeland municipality Frain to the Thaya became to 28. May 2005 in presence numerous native Frainer at the old road of Felling - at the cemetery past - after Podmyče/Pomitsch with Vranov nad Dyjí/Frain to the Thaya on the occasion of 60. Anniversary of driving out geweiht. To 24. May 1945 had been sold the German-speaking population from their homeland.

Three times this wood cross was replaced by a new, then however already at the present location.

To 8. May 2004 was replaced the ageweak wood cross - provide with all necessary permission - by a weather-proof steel cross. In a metal box are an explaining text as well as „a guest book “, which show that despite the remoteness of the intending cross numerous visitors visit this place with his beautiful prospect over the Thayatal and after Cizov/Zaisa.
