Woerden is a municipality in the Netherlands, province Utrecht (until 1989: South Holland).
To the municipality the city Woerden and the villages coming Eric, Zegveld and Harmelen belong. The number of inhabitants amounts to 48,118 (at the beginning of of 2005), by those about 34,000 in the city Woerden. Woerden is connected since 1972 by a partnership between cities with the westfälischen Steinhagen.

situation and economics
Woerden lies 12 kilometers to the west of Utrecht, toward Gouda - the Hague / Rotterdam. With these cities it is connected by iron and motorways, but only few courses hold in Woerden. The city is because of the river “Oude Rijn “, which has little meaning more however for the navigation. Woerden has a cheese factory ( “Goudse kaas”), a factory of Desserts and yogurt, as many commercial enterprises. In the environment much cattle breeding and horticulture.
history
where the Woerdener city center lies now, was once a Roman castellet named Laurii. Starting from approximately 1160 Woerden was a border fortress of the diocese Utrecht against Holland. Count Floris V. from Holland it conquered temporarily for its country and let 1287 a lock build there. Woerden received the municipal law to 1372. It became later an important cheese and cattle market. In the eighty-year old war it was besieged 1575 by the Spaniards. The Frenchmen looked for the city 1672, 1673, and, under Napoleon Bonaparte, again 1813 home.
In a meadow area at the farmer village belonging to the municipality Harmelen found to 8. January 1962 the largest railway disaster in Netherlands history instead of. 93 dead ones fell, and there were 52 hurt. The absence of roads with the misfortune place had strongly made the rescue work more difficult.
