Wolfgang Unzicker

Wolfgang Unzicker (* 26. June 1925 in Pirmasens; † 20. April 2006 in Albufeira) was a German chess player.

Wolfgang Unzicker was the son of study professor Eugen Unzicker (1884-1976), which organized into the 1920er years chess tournaments.

By occupation lawyer, never operated Wolfgang Unzicker chess as a professional. He worked first as a civil servant in the government of Upper Bavaria, starting from 1971 as a judge on the Administrative Court Munich. For the participation in chess tournaments it took vacation in each case.

In the 1950er and 1960er years was he the strongest player of Germany. In international tournaments it reserved several times first seats, about 1948 in Luzern, 1949 in Heidelberg, 1950 in Travemünde, 1950/51 in Hastings, 1951/52 in Luzern, 1954 in the zone tournament Munich, 1965 in Soci, 1967 in Maribor and 1967 in Krems. 1966 it became in Santa Monica fourth and platzierte themselves thereby before Petrosjan, Reshevsky, Najdorf, Ivkov and thunder.

1950 he became international master. The title of a chess large master he achieved 1954. Between 1948 and 1965 he won seven times the German championship, i.e. 1948 in meal (all-German master), 1950 in bath Pyrmont, 1952 in Berlin, 1953 in Leipzig (all-German master), 1959 in Nuremberg, 1963 in bath Pyrmont and 1965 in bath Aibling (common with Helmut Pfleger after broken off pass fight). Eight times he became with Munich 1836 German crew master. It participated in 13 chess Olympiads and is with 367 employments record national players.

1956 it lost a match against Paul Keres with 6:2 (+4, -0, =4). This match is remarkable, because in all eight portions the Spanish opening was played.

Since beginning of the 1980er years played Unzicker in the federal league, later played it with Tarrasch Munich:

Unzicker was married with the water color painter Freia (*1938) and leaves three sons: Alexander Gerhard (*1965) is a secondary school teacher, Ferdinand (*14. August 1971) is lawyer and chess player (2. Federal league with Bavaria Munich, max. ELO 2318), and Stefan.

Unzicker died to 20.04.2006 during a vacation trip in Portugal at heart failure.

This had been necessary, because players sträubten themselves such as large master Robert Hübner against the regulation that portion notations are property of the tournament organizer.

Unzicker received honors the silver laurel leaf. 1984 it was distinguished by the city Munich with the city medal.
