relationship with other languages
Zuni is ranked at present among the isolated languages. Some linguists assigned it to the Penuti Sprachfamilie. Bertha Dutton set up the hypothesis that the Zuni language after its basis vocabulary, „… if it a member of the Penuti Sprachfamilie is, a distant relationship with the Tanoan languages (Tewi) exhibits.“
The Penuti Hypothesis set up of Alfreds Kroeber and Roland B. Dixon and specifies later from Edward Sapir. This happened in the context of the attempt to reduce the number of isolated language families in a culturally various region with central area on the California central coast. The theory is load-carrying for some languages, for the verified relationship of these California original languages with the Zuni is missing however so far still relevant related words. Probably the languages already developed for 3000 or 5000 years independently of each other.
