The President of Ukraine (Ukrainian: Президент України, Prezydent Ukrayiny) is the head of the state of Ukraine and acts in its name. The President is the guarantor of the state sovereignty and territorial indivisibility, the observance of the Constitution of Ukraine and human and citizens' rights and freedoms. The President is elected by popular vote and serves a 5-year term in office.

The President's official residence for ceremonial purposes is Mariyinsky Palace.

Currently, the President of Ukraine is Viktor Yushchenko who was sworn in on January 23, 2005.

Presidents of the Ukrainian People's Republic

The Ukrainian People's Republic was formed after the Russian Revolution of 1917, and lasted until the Peace of Riga between Poland and Soviet Russia in March, 1921.

Ukraine enjoyed only limited autonomy from the Soviet Union government in Moscow and the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine was the de-facto leader of the republic rather than the chairman of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada


Presidents of Ukraine

On July 5, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR passed a law establishing the post of the President of the Ukrainian SSR. The title was changed to the President of Ukraine upon the proclamation of independence (August 24, 1991). The first election of the President of Ukraine was held on December 1, 1991.
