Kiev University
The Kiev University (current full official name National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv) is the leading University in Ukraine, located in the capital city Kiev (Kyiv).
It was founded in 1834 as the University of Saint Vladimir (after Vladimir the Great of Kiev). During its first year it had sixty-two students at the only School of Philosophy, which had two departments: the Department of History and Philology and the Department of Physics and Mathematics. In 1939, during the Soviet era, the University was named after Taras Shevchenko, the foremost poet and the iconic figure of Ukrainian culture. In 1994 the University was granted the national status.
Nowadays, Kiev University has fourteen departments with more than 30,000 students in 63 specialities. Each year, more than 20,000 enrollees take part in entrance examinations, which less than third of them passes. The staff includes more than 2,000 instructors and more than 1,000 researchers; among them about 82% have Ph.D. degree and 24% have D.Sc. degree. The university has its own botanical garden, zoological museum, astronomical observatory, science library, computing center, publishing house, etc.
