History

Initially a Polish village, Zielona Góra was established as a township in the 13th century by Flemish settlers. Part of the Duchy of Głogów from 1250, it received its city rights probably in 1323. In 1477, Zielona Góra defeated a 5,000 army of Brandenburg, which was attempting to seize the city. After the collapse of the Duchy of Żagań, Zielona Góra fell under Czech control. The astronomer Bartholomaeus Pitiscus was born in this city in 1561.

Wineries

Zielona Góra is one of two places in Poland with wine growing (mainly white wines; there is another wine growing region near the town of Warka in Masovia). The first wineries around Zielona Góra were built in 1314. At Paradyż Abbey near Zielona Góra, monks have been making wine since 1250. The number of wineyards at peak production is estimated at 4,000 in the region, and 2,500 in Zielona Góra itself. The most famous wine is called "Monte Verde". During Communist times, wine production was reduced, but since 1990 it has recovered. However, nowadays wine is no longer produced in Zielona Góra (the last factory was closed in the early 1990s).
