Wikipedia in Spanish

Wikipedia in Spanish it is an edition of Wikipedia in Spanish. Begun in May of 2001, this edition reached 50,000 articles 30 of May of 2005. At the moment it is the tenth edition of Wikipedia in number of articles. It was the eighth greater edition during long time, until Wikipedia in Portuguese it exceeded it in May of 2005 and later, Wikipedia in Italian, in August of 2005.

In February of 2002 most of the participants of the edition was not in agreement with the proposal (rejected later) to finance Wikipedia by means of publicity, and they separated of the project to establish the project brother Free Encyclopedia. Due to this incident, all the proposals following on the financing of wikipedia through publicity fast and have been firmly rejected by the leader of the Wikipedia Jimbo Wales.

After the separation, the Wikipedia in Spanish had a very little activity until the update to Phase III of software, call later MediaWiki, when the number of users began to increase again. To date of June of 2005, the Wikipedia in Spanish is, of length, the most active project of both.
