Linguistics
? is used to represent diphthong Dutch [ E? ] or [??]. When it is not accentuated, ? decides like one schwa. It sometimes is called "? length ", in opposition to "? short "noted I.E.(internal excitation) and in the same way marked in the majority of the Dutch dialects.
At the beginning of a sentence or a proper name, the J of? is written in capital: IJssel, IJmuiden.
Alphabetical classification
Nowadays, ? is classified like the letter Y; moreover, ? replace sometimes Y: in Dutch, Y appears only in antiquated forms and is called Griekse? ("I Greek", loan with French).
History
? probably developed from II, representing an I long. Ajourd' today, ? is pronounced like I.E.(internal excitation), except for the suffix - l?k, or it is pronounced like one schwa.
