Surface is an affluent of. It has a 143 km length, takes its source in the department of (55) and joins just upstream of Pimpernel, in (08). Its catchment area has a surface of 1043 km². It has a medium flow of 63 m³/s. It is not a navigable river.

It has five affluents (upstream in downstream) : Ezrule, Cousance, Buanthe, Exermont and Argon.
