Collegial Saint-Barthélemy of Liege
Founded apart from the walls of the city, Holy Barthélemy of , characteristic of the imposing style ottonien, was built, out of coal-bearing sandstone, of the end of XIE century (the bedside) at the last years of XIIE century (massive Westerner, with its twin towers of Rhenish model rebuilt in 1876) and knew, like the majority of the religious buildings, of many modifications during centuries. Nevertheless the Romance character mosan of Saint-Barthélemy remained deeply anchored in its architecture. With XVIIIE century, one added two naves, one bored the Western solid mass of a neo-classic gate and one decorated the interior in French baroque. The interior of the Western solid mass is currently in the course of restoration in the original Romance style.
The church shelters many?uvres of art, note especially a table of the painter inhabitant of Liège Bertholet Flémalle (1614-1675), Glorification of Sainte-Croix; one chief-of?uvre of the Inhabitant of Liège Englebert Fisen (1655-1733), Crucifixion; the statue of Roch saint realized by Disavowing Panhay de Rendeux (1684-1744). But Saint-Barthélemy is initially the ECRIN of one of the jewels of universal art: the baptismal font of the goldsmith To disavow of Huy. They were ordered at the beginning of XIIE century by the Hellin abbot for the church Our-injury-with-Font, destroyed today, where the baptism traditionally was managed.
The font was installed with the Saint-Barthélemy church in 1804, after being withdrawn from greed revolutionists.
This?uvre remarkable advertisement a resurgence of the Greek influences on Western art. The baptismal tank, out of brass, supported by ten b?ufs (twelve in the beginning) presents five scenes: Baptism of in the Jordan, the Preaching of Jean-Baptist saint, the Baptism of the Catechumens, the Baptism of the centurion Crow, the Baptism of the Craton philosopher. The Preaching of Jean-Baptist saint and the Baptism of the Catechumens prepare the splendid principal scene, the Baptism of Jesus; the Baptism of the centurion Crow and the Baptism of the Craton philosopher supplement it.
