near is the name of one of the two biogeographic areas of, according to a subdivision more modern than the traditional one, without scientific but always widespread base, due to .
It includes/understands it, and surrounding archipelagoes like islands of Admiralty as well as . In fact islands are close the ones to the others and which are opposed to those ofDistant Oceania, as well in the field of botany, the zoology as from the cultural and human point of view.
It corresponds to the plate Sahul, in English Sahul Shelf, separated from the remainder of Asia by Wallacea and the Wallace line.
It was occupied by three principal waves of the species Homo sapiens :

- and them Austronésiens, the arrived last and which starting from Solomon, ended up occupying itDistant Oceania.
This concept was forged by Pawley and Green, two linguists, in 1973.
