The word 'littérature' (of Latin subparagraph, letter, then will litteratura « writing », « grammar », « culture ") indicates mainly:

  1. The whole of ?uvres written or oral founded on the language and comprising a dimension esthetics (with the difference for example of the?uvres scientists or didactic);
  2. activities of production and ofstudy such?uvres.

The literature, in its first direction, is thus one art with whole share. But, it is sometimes difficult to determine the limits of this art when writings are approached , of plays, or of the scenarios which also concern Performing arts.

Generally, the literature will gather the?uvres here having either an aesthetic goal or a particular aesthetic form. This thus excludes the purely philosophical, political or historical writings.

Synopsis

Definition

The word is sometimes used as in a broader direction, to indicate a whole of texts published, as they have or not an aesthetic dimension. It is in the sense that one can speak for example about scientific literature.

The expression gray literature indicate the administrative texts or of research not published being used for the exchanges between professionals of the same discipline. These broad directions are not relevant within the framework of this heading.

There are two types of literature: the major one: that which covers universal subjects; the minor one: that which covers for example regionalistic subjects
