Heir to old fine Frenchwoman of XVIIIE century, square is one dance of ball in vogue from the very start of XIXE century and until First World War.
It is generally danced with four couples laid out in square and comprises, in its initial version, five following figures:

- the summer
- the hen
- the trénis, replaced about 1830 by the pastourelle one
- the final
