Trial

trial is a sporting discipline with motor bike, bicycle, , or truck. "Trial mean "English test" (contraction of TRY ALL "All to test") because success is not assured. The trial consists indeed in the crossing of natural or artificial obstacles. It was born in England with the beginning from last century practised by "gentlemen farmers" on traditional motor bikes.

In competition this sport is practised spring with the autumn in outside (outdoor) and in winter inside (indoor). In the motor bike, this discipline is dominated by Spanish, English and Japanese. The last champions of the French world are Gilles Burgat in 1981 then Thierry Michaud into 1985,1986 and 1988. In 2004, Adam Raga the title of Champion of the World holds indoor (FIM) and Takahisa Fujinami the championship gained outdoor putting thus fine at 6 years of domination of Doug Lampkin. Spanish Adam Raga has just taken down its first world crown in outdoor with the handlebar of one Gas Gas (September 2005).

Payment

A competition outdoor of bicycle or motor bike trial proceeds on a circuit (interzone) of about fifteen kilometers for the motor bikes, 3 A 4 km for the bicycles, on which are delimited sections (zones) in which the competitors, each one in their turn, try to cross the obstacles (rocks, slope, roots, etc) while posing the least possible of feet with ground. All the pilots evolve/move in the same zones. But according to their qualities of pilots, they evolve/move in different layouts. There are several levels of difficulties going from the beginner to the pilot elite. In the motor bike trial, the levels are: 昇進、S3 、S2 、S1 の専門家。 In these zones, several police chiefs enter the number of feet posed by the competitor and allot a total of points (see table). Each competitor carries a small paperboard (tie) on which the police chief will punch the number of points allotted to the pilot. To the end of each turn (3 in general) the pilot will give his tie to the office of the inscriptions which will add up the number of points and this office will make the total of the points obtained on the total of the turns. The victorious pilot will be the pilot having less points.

The FFM (French Federation of Motor bike) is the federation of the modern trialists.

Design features

The characteristics of these motor bikes are:

• A weak weight (70 kg)
• Reduced dimensions
• An engine whose couple plays a part more important than the power itself.
• No the saddle to facilitate the placement of the pilot
• A suspention with broad clearance

These characteristics confer to them a very great handiness and a capacity of crossing out of the commun run.

As for the bicycles of trial, their principal characteristics are as follows:

• a specific framework of the category of selected bicycle: for a bicycle with wheels of 20 inches, the framework is connected has that of a BMX, longer and for a bicycle with wheels of 26 inches, the framework resembles has that of a usual VTT, in spite of a lower "saddle", a case of higher pedals and a position upright obligatory
• no the saddle or a saddle symbolic system

The cubic capacities go 50 cm³ to 300 cm³ approximately, the most adapted cubic capacity being located at the neighbourhoods of 250 cm³.

The trial in the old motor bike

The trial is also practised with old motor bikes on similar layouts with those of the time of these machines, with obstacles adapted to their performances where one privileges more the technique of passage than the taking risk.

One finds, years by years, more and more of followers eager to use mechanics of another age, under the conditions of the time, this by nostalgia, love of the beautiful machines and also for the cordial environment which one finds at the time of such meetings.

The UFOLEP is the most active federation of the trialists to old. The AFATA is the organizing association of the Championship of motor bikes trial to old. Two important categories exist. Pre 65 and the post 65 to the neighbourhood of 1983.
