104曲+数曲。今でこそハイドンの交響曲はあまりにもポピュラーな存在であるが、実は20世紀の前半までは意外とマイナーな存在であり、演奏も後期作品がたまに演奏される程度であり、レコーディングに至ってはアルトゥーロ・トスカニーニが「時計」を2回もレコーディングしたこと自体が驚かれるほどであたっという。アンタル・ドラティが世界で初めてハイドンの交響曲全集を完成させた。

弦楽四重奏曲

　アントニー・ヴァン・ホーボーケンによって、83曲がハイドンの弦楽四重奏曲として、作曲順の番号（ホーボーケン番号）が付されたが、後に偽作と判明されたもの（op.3など8曲）及び他の曲種からの編曲（op.51の7曲）を除くと、ハイドンのオリジナルの弦楽四重奏曲としては68曲になる。ただし、付された作曲順の番号は、それまで慣習的に使われてきたため、除かれた番号を欠番としてそのまま使われている。これら68曲の弦楽四重奏曲は、6曲または3曲ごとに作曲されているのが通例である。
