Central horse racing

またGIレースの開催日はその日の中心レースとして盛り上げるため全場のレース出走時間・順序を調整し、同時開催のGI以外のメインレース（重賞・平地特別）をGIレースの前（15時台の前半 一般には第3場→GIの行わない主場の順）、GIレースは15時台後半に行うようにしている。但し12月開催の中山競馬場に於けるGI2レースについては日没の時間等を考慮して通常の冬季編成と同じ順序（中山→中京→阪神）で発走する。
但し重賞競走を除く特別競走でも出走頭数が8頭以下しか揃わなかった場合は予定のレース順序を変更することもあり、その日の特別競走で最も賞金条件の高いクラス（一般にはオープン、1600万円クラス）を割り当てるメイン競走であっても準メインなどに降格させることもまれにある。
特別競走の名称は原則として次のものに統一されている。
- 2歳・3歳限定競走 花（むらさき賞は除く）
- 4歳（夏開催以降は3歳）以上の競走 地名・誕生石などその他の名称
- 地名に関してはその競馬場が所属している地域の地名が取り上げられる。
- 北海道開催は北海道と青森県（主として函館開催）関係。
- 福島は青森県以外の東北関係。
- 中山は千葉県、茨城県、栃木県関係。
- 東京は東京都、神奈川県、埼玉県、山梨県、静岡県関係。
- 新潟は新潟県、富山県関係。
- 中京は静岡県以外の東海地方関係。
- 京都は京都府、滋賀県、奈良県関係。
- 阪神は兵庫県、大阪府、並びに中国（山口県除く）・四国地方関係。
- 小倉は九州地方・山口県関係。
また、日中の昼休みをこれまでの第5競走終了後から第4競走終了後に変更して12時台の開催にも積極的に取り組んでいる。
薄暮レース
中央競馬では、2004年度に中央競馬50周年記念「JRAゴールデンジュビリーキャンペーン」の一環として、7~9月の函館競馬場、及び札幌競馬場における発走時刻を通常より1時間遅くし、第1レースは10:55に、15:25発走の第9レースをテレビ中継放送の関係上メインレース扱いとした上で、16:40と17:10に発走する第11,12レース（いずれも特別競走。第11レースは準メインレース扱い）を「函館（札幌）はくぼ」と題した薄暮レースを試行的に実施し、大好評を得たため2005年度も継続されることとなった。また2005年度から小倉競馬場でも薄暮レースが開催されるようになった。
2006年度の薄暮レース概要
- 期間7月15日（第2回函館、第2回小倉初日）～9月4日（第1回札幌、第3回小倉最終日）
- 対象となる競馬場 函館競馬場（～8月6日まで）、札幌競馬場（8月12日～）、小倉競馬場（全期間）
- 薄暮レースの対象 函館、札幌は第11,12レース、小倉は第12レースのみ
- 発走時間 第1レースは函館、札幌は10:55、小倉は10:30。最終レースは函館、札幌が17:10、小倉は16:50とする。
- 特別レース 新潟は第9～11レース、小倉は第9、10、12レース、函館、札幌は第9、11、12レースを特別競走に割り当て、メインレースは2004年、2005年と同様にテレビ中継の配慮上15時台に行うことにし、函館、札幌は第9レース、小倉は第10レースを割り当てる。なお特別4レース開催の場合は第9～12レースも特別レースの対象となる。メインレースの発走順序は函館・札幌→新潟→小倉となる。
- またこれに伴い、重賞競走の日曜日開催分の前売りも函館、札幌の最終レースの発売締切時間に併せて締め切る。（通常は17時締め切り）

- 札幌競馬場はホッカイドウ競馬（公営競馬）と併用している。他に中央・地方の競馬のレースが併用開催された競馬場は函館、新潟、中京の各場があるが、現在は何れも撤退（中京は休止中）となっているため、現段階では札幌のみ。
- 現在は上記10ヶ所だが、戦前の日本競馬会体制時には以下の競馬場が存在した。実質上の開催は戦後行われていなかったが、長らく「休止」扱いとされ、1994年の競馬法改正にによって開催競馬場から削除された。

日本で行われるグレードレースについては、現在は国際的には通用しないものであるが、ジャパンカップ（1992年以降）、宝塚記念（2001年以降）、安田記念（2004年以降）、マイルチャンピオンシップ（2004年以降）の4レースは国際的にグレードワンとして認められている。

GIレースに於ける入場券・指定席券の発売
- 1990年代以後、GIレース開催競馬場は、大勢のファン、特に競馬ブームの一時期は10万人を超すファンがレースの応援に駆けつけた。
- その為中央競馬会では混雑緩和という名目で、一部GIレース（クラシック3冠レースや天皇賞、有馬記念）では前売りされる記念入場券を事前に購入しないと当日のGIレース開催競馬場に入場することが出来ない、入場制限が実施された。現在は当日入場もできるようになっているが、それでも前売り券を購入している人を優先し、当日券や回数券購入者は時差入場（開門後から30分後）してもらう処置が取られるケースもある。
- また、同じように主要GIレースでは指定席券を全て事前の前売りとしているケースも多い。競馬場の指定席の種別によってJRAカード（クレジットカード）による予約制と、葉書申し込みや競馬場で指定席を購入した利用者を対象とした抽選による発売とに分かれているので、JRA発表の告知を参考にされたい。
中央競馬各種ファンファーレなどの作曲者
中央競馬では以前から出走馬が本場場入場する際に著名作曲家が作った入場テーマソングを演奏（テープ）しているが、1987年にJRAの呼称が付いて以降、各競走のファンファーレも著名作曲家製作のものに変更された。GIレースについては一部レースを除き楽団（大半は陸上自衛隊、海上自衛隊付属の音楽隊）による生演奏が行われている。ただし、客がその曲に合わせるかの様に手拍子を打つようになり、競走馬に悪影響を与えることがあったため、後に追加された障害競走のファンファーレについては「手拍子を打ちにくいこと」をコンセプトに作曲されたほどである。
入場テーマソング
何れも関東はすぎやまこういち、関西、北海道は鷺巣詩郎（但し「サラブレッドマーチ」のみ渡辺岳夫との共同作曲）が作曲している。
