1892アメリカのウイリアム･ペインター（William Painter）により発明された。金属製の本体の側面に21本の溝が刻まれており、溝の上部が瓶の飲み口部の膨らみに噛み合い密閉される。瓶の飲み口部と王冠の寸法は規格化されており、口径は27mm、王冠の高さは5.97mmとなっている。本体の裏側にはパッキンが貼り付けられており、瓶の飲み口部に密着することで密封度が保たれる。パッキンには、コルクシート、PVC樹脂など様々な素材が利用されるが、現在ではほとんどの物がポリエチレン樹脂を用いている。

日本での歴史は、1900年に東京麦酒（前身は桜田麦酒で後に大日本麦酒に吸収される）が利用したのが最初であるといわれている。
